HOPE WARDROBE PROJECT

Hope Wardrobe Project started as a little spark in January 2025 and has with a lot of help from friends grown into this!

It all started with a wardrobe clear out, I had bags of clothes that were in such great condition that I never wore and it got me thinking, yes I sent these clothes to charity shops but what was happening with all this clothes waste, from me and from so many others. We buy, we wear but we don't often stop to think about what happens to our clothes when we let them go, whether that be to charity shops or to landfill so I decided to do some research.

After doing some reading I learnt that the average UK adult spends over £900 on clothing every year but that 300,000 tonnes of clothes go to landfill annually too and these clothes aren't only those you throw in the bin. The cost of living is rising and the cost of second hand clothing is rising too, many items donated to charity shops around the UK are never sold and end up in landfill as well.

And a secondary issue to these rising costs, the one that hit me most was that the for the people who rely on charity shops, the prices are too high and so many people are going without the clothes they need. 5.5 million adults go without essential clothing, 12% of young people do not have the opportunity to get clothing for job interviews. This is devastating, particularly as so many of us are blessed with abundance; a quote from Green Heart Collective a social enterprise based in Gateshead dedicated to reducing waste to landfill stood out in my research 'In the UK alone, the average adult has 118 items of clothing in their wardrobes (WRAP). In our last blog we explored how with just 33 items in your wardrobe you could potentially make 25,176 unique outfits. Less is more.' So please give, donate, bring bold passionate hope!
